The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is a government fund that takes money from your salary every month. It is meant to help workers who lose their jobs by giving them some money while they look for new work. For many people in South Africa, this fund is very important because they have no other way to support themselves.

What is going wrong?

Recently, a big business group called Business Unity South Africa (Busa) decided to leave the group that helps run the UIF. They said the fund has serious problems and is not being managed well. For two years, people have tried to fix these problems, but nothing has changed.

In February, the head of the UIF, Teboho Maruping, was fired after being suspended for 18 months. During that time, he was paid about R2.5 million for doing nothing. Before that, he tried to spend R5 billion of the fund's money on a private investment, which many people thought was a bad idea.

Why does this matter to you?

The UIF has billions of rand, but if it keeps being run badly, it could run out of money. This would be a disaster for the millions of workers who depend on it. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people had to queue all night just to get R350 a month. If the fund fails, things could get much worse.

What can be done?

The government needs to fix the UIF quickly. Better management and more honesty are needed so that the money goes to the workers who need it, not to bad investments or salaries for suspended officials.
